How do sports injuries occur?

Sports injuries can happen for numerous reasons. The most common are:

  • Overexertion – Exceeding your fitness levels puts excessive strain on your joints, muscles, and connective tissues. This can be a particular problem for you if you’re a weekend warrior who’s in an office all week. Overreaching – for example, to return a serve or make a touchdown — can also overstrain your body.
  • Collisions and Falls – Falling or running into people or objects are more common in contact sports, but almost every sport has the potential for causing injuries this way.
  • Stress and Overuse Injuries – Problems like stress fractures and tendinitis happen bit by bit, causing tiny cracks in your bones or tears in your tendons that build up and cause chronic pain.
  • Poor Technique – If you don’t use the correct technique when playing sports, it can put too much stress on certain areas of your body, causing problems like back pain.

Making awkward movements when playing sports and failing to use high-quality equipment that fits properly can also cause sports injuries.

What kinds of sports injuries might I experience?

Dr. Pancio treats sports injuries affecting the shoulder, elbow, knee, and ankle. Some of the more common sports injuries he sees include:

  • Rotator cuff tears.
  • Achilles tendinitis.
  • Triceps and biceps tendon tears.
  • Pectoralis tendon tears.
  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) sprains.
  • Medial collateral ligament (MCL) sprains.
  • Ankle sprains.
  • Acromioclavicular (AC) joint separation.
  • Shoulder sprains.
  • Fractures of the upper and lower limbs.
  • Meniscus tears.
  • Labral tears.
  • Dislocations.

Dr. Pancio completed specialized training in sports medicine and is an affiliate physician for the United States Ski Team, so you can be confident of his expertise in treating your sports injuries.

How are sports injuries treated?

Most sports injuries heal with a combination of non-surgical treatments. Dr. Pancio is likely to recommend rest, avoidance of activities that could worsen the injury, and physical therapy to help the injury heal.

You might require pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory medication, but don’t use it to mask the pain so you can go back to playing. You could do yourself permanent harm.

More serious or persistent sports injuries might require additional treatments, such as joint injections, viscosupplementation, and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy.

Dr. Pancio provides individualized treatment that focuses on returning you to your sport of choice at the same or higher level of ability and competition.

Would I need surgery for sports injuries?

Certain injuries, like ligament and cartilage tears, may not heal well without assistance. Severe ruptures and injuries that aren’t responding to non-surgical approaches might also require further intervention.

Dr. Pancio can perform a range of advanced, minimally invasive arthroscopic surgeries when necessary to repair these tissues and restore function.

I was hit by car, had a compound fracture with a bone sticking out of my left foot. Broken tibia and fibia?. Screwed plate and bones back together. I am healing fine, next visit 3/26 to remove stiches. I seem to have total function of foot. Still have 2 more weeks of not using leg, but very hopeful.

Dr. Pancho is high energy and personable. He didn’t rush through follow up appointments and made sure we understood any procedures and answered all of my questions. I especially liked how he kept my wife informed of my progress during surgery and by phone speaker during appointments. His written material he gave me was personalized for my specific injury and was easy to follow.

My son was seen for a broken arm. Everyone was very kind and patient with him, as this was a new experience for us. I am very pleased with the service we received and for a healed arm.

Dr. Pancio studied my daughters MRI before he came in and talked to us. He examined her knee and told us that her exam confirmed what he had found on the MRI which was missed by the radiologist. He prescribed the appropriate physical therapy and my daughter is on her way to making a full recovery without surgery! If she would have needed surgery, we have full confidence that Dr. Pancio would be great! He is very observant and knowledgeable. He explained everything that is going on with her knee also why and when it would hurt in different situations.
