Why would I need shoulder surgery?
You might need shoulder surgery if you have an injury or degenerative condition for which there’s no other effective treatment.
Most causes of shoulder pain get better using nonsurgical approaches like physical therapy, joint injections, and regenerative medicine techniques. However, some injuries don’t heal well because of their severity or the nature of the tissues involved.
The parts of your shoulder that are most likely to require surgery include the:
- Rotator Cuff – The rotator cuff keeps the ball-shaped end of the top of your humerus (upper arm bone) securely seated in its socket. The network of muscles and tendons that make up your rotator cuff also gives your arm its wide range of motion.
- Labrum – The labrum is a ring of cartilage around the edge of the glenoid – the socket into which your humerus fits. The labrum stops the ball-shaped head of your humerus from moving away from the glenoid.
- Biceps Tendon – Your biceps tendon attaches the large muscle on the front of your upper arm to your shoulder and forms part of your rotator cuff.
- AC Joint – The AC (acromioclavicular) joint is the point where the top of your shoulder blade (the acromion) links with your collarbone (clavicle).
- Cartilage – Articular cartilage coats the ends of the bones in all your joints. It’s a robust and slippery substance that stops your bones from rubbing together.
What conditions can shoulder surgery treat?
Shoulder surgery is an option for severe shoulder pain and treatment-resistant conditions and injuries, including:
- Rotator cuff tear.
- Shoulder labral tear.
- Shoulder arthritis and impingement.
- Shoulder dislocation.
- SLAP (superior labrum from anterior to posterior) tear.
- Humerus and clavicle fractures.
- Frozen shoulder.
- AC joint injury or arthritis.
- Pectoralis tendon rupture.
- Biceps and rotator cuff tendinitis.
- Shoulder bursitis.
- Calcific tendinitis.
Dr. Pancio has undergone specialist training in shoulder surgery and is an expert in sports injuries, making him one of the most well-qualified surgeons in the area.
What type of shoulder surgery might I need?
The type of shoulder surgery you need depends on the cause of your problem and its severity. Options include:
- Arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.
- Arthroscopic labrum repair.
- Subacromial decompression.
- Superior labral (SLAP) repair.
- Shoulder dislocation and stabilization.
- Latarjet procedure for repeated dislocations.
- Total shoulder replacement.
- Reverse total shoulder replacement.
- Humerus fracture surgery.
- Clavicle fracture surgery.
- AC joint separation repair and reconstruction.
- Revision total shoulder replacement.
- Arthroscopic superior capsular reconstruction.
- Frozen shoulder surgery.
- Pectoralis tendon rupture repair.
Where possible, Dr. Pancio performs shoulder surgery using minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques. Shoulder arthroscopy is a form of keyhole surgery, using small incisions that minimize tissue damage and recovery times.

ABOUT DR.
PANCIO
I was hit by car, had a compound fracture with a bone sticking out of my left foot. Broken tibia and fibia?. Screwed plate and bones back together. I am healing fine, next visit 3/26 to remove stiches. I seem to have total function of foot. Still have 2 more weeks of not using leg, but very hopeful.
Very considerate and professional. Did not at any time feel rushed. Offered advice without surgery. Prior surgery by him was extremely successful. Excellent Doctor.
Very professional happy with visit explained issue and treatment process and took time to answer my questions and concerns.
Very smooth experience. Dr. Pancio was very focused, patient, and communicative through every step.
He actually took the time to listen and respond appropriately. He was upfront and honest. Much appreciated.
Very helpful.
No problems. Staff was efficient and courteous. Dr. was professional and honest.
Dr. Pancho is high energy and personable. He didn’t rush through follow up appointments and made sure we understood any procedures and answered all of my questions. I especially liked how he kept my wife informed of my progress during surgery and by phone speaker during appointments. His written material he gave me was personalized for my specific injury and was easy to follow.
My son was seen for a broken arm. Everyone was very kind and patient with him, as this was a new experience for us. I am very pleased with the service we received and for a healed arm.
Dr. Pancio studied my daughters MRI before he came in and talked to us. He examined her knee and told us that her exam confirmed what he had found on the MRI which was missed by the radiologist. He prescribed the appropriate physical therapy and my daughter is on her way to making a full recovery without surgery! If she would have needed surgery, we have full confidence that Dr. Pancio would be great! He is very observant and knowledgeable. He explained everything that is going on with her knee also why and when it would hurt in different situations.
