Why would I need knee surgery?

Knee surgery is something you might consider if you have an injury that can’t heal without repair or a degenerative condition like arthritis that’s no longer responding to other treatments.

Your knee is your body’s largest joint. Some of the structures within your knee that might require surgery include:

  • Meniscus – The meniscus is a crescent-shaped area of cartilage that cushions and protects your knee joint. There are two in each knee.
  • ACL – The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) is a tough length of connective tissue that’s one of four ligaments connecting the bones in your knee. It crosses diagonally at the front of the knee joint.
  • Articular Cartilage – Articular cartilage is the smooth white layer of slippery tissue that covers the ends of the bones in your joints. It enables your joints to operate without creating friction.
  • Patella – The patella (knee cap) is a small section of bone on the front of your knee that attaches to your femur (thigh bone). Your patella protects the knee joint.
  • Patellar Tendon – The patellar tendon joins your patella and tibia (shinbone) to the muscles in your thigh.

What conditions might require knee surgery?

Knee injuries and conditions that Dr. Pancio uses surgery to treat include:

  • ACL tears.
  • MCL and LCL sprains or tears.
  • Meniscus tears.
  • Cartilage defects.
  • Arthritis.
  • Fractures about the knee.
  • Quadriceps and patella tendon rupture.
  • Patella dislocation.
  • Patellofemoral syndrome.
  • Patellar tendinitis.

Many of these conditions are common sports injuries.

How is knee surgery Performed?

In most cases, Dr. Pancio can perform knee surgery using arthroscopic techniques. Knee arthroscopy is minimally invasive, meaning it doesn’t require any large incisions.

Dr. Pancio makes one or more very small cuts in the tissues around your knee to insert the arthroscope and his surgical instruments. The arthroscope is an instrument with a camera on its tip that sends back a video feed of the inside of your knee.

Using this feed, Dr. Pancio can make the repairs you need without having to see the structures directly. Using minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques causes significantly less tissue damage than open surgery. That means less pain and a swifter return to action.

What type of surgery might I need for my knees?

Some of the different types of surgery you might require for your knees include:

  • Arthroscopic ACL reconstruction.
  • MCL and LCL repair or reconstruction.
  • Arthroscopic meniscus repair.
  • Cartilage restoration surgery.
  • Joint preservation surgery.
  • Partial joint replacement.
  • Total knee replacement.
  • Femur fracture surgery.
  • Tibia fracture surgery.
  • Quadriceps and patella tendon rupture repair.
  • Patella dislocation surgery.

I was hit by car, had a compound fracture with a bone sticking out of my left foot. Broken tibia and fibia?. Screwed plate and bones back together. I am healing fine, next visit 3/26 to remove stiches. I seem to have total function of foot. Still have 2 more weeks of not using leg, but very hopeful.

Dr. Pancho is high energy and personable. He didn’t rush through follow up appointments and made sure we understood any procedures and answered all of my questions. I especially liked how he kept my wife informed of my progress during surgery and by phone speaker during appointments. His written material he gave me was personalized for my specific injury and was easy to follow.

My son was seen for a broken arm. Everyone was very kind and patient with him, as this was a new experience for us. I am very pleased with the service we received and for a healed arm.

Dr. Pancio studied my daughters MRI before he came in and talked to us. He examined her knee and told us that her exam confirmed what he had found on the MRI which was missed by the radiologist. He prescribed the appropriate physical therapy and my daughter is on her way to making a full recovery without surgery! If she would have needed surgery, we have full confidence that Dr. Pancio would be great! He is very observant and knowledgeable. He explained everything that is going on with her knee also why and when it would hurt in different situations.
