What is joint replacement?
Joint replacement surgery involves removing parts of the bones in your joint and fitting artificial components.
The replacement part, also known as a prosthesis, can be made of plastic, ceramic, or metal. They’re sophisticated components that mimic the natural function of your joints.
The operation Dr. Pancio performs to fit your prosthesis is called arthroplasty.
Why would I need a joint replacement?
Joint replacement surgery is an option for conditions like osteoarthritis that are causing significant pain and disability.
Most patients who have arthritis and other chronic musculoskeletal disorders benefit from a conservative approach to treatment. Dr. Pancio typically combines therapies such as:
- Medication.
- Physical therapy.
- Viscosupplementation.
- Steroid injections.
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy.
If these treatments lose their effectiveness or simply don’t work for you, joint replacement surgery offers a practical, long-term solution.
Knees, hips, shoulders, elbows, wrists, and ankles are all suitable for joint replacement surgery. Dr. Pancio has specialist training in performing arthroplasty surgery, including:
- Total Shoulder Replacement – Dr. Pancio removes the diseased end of your upper arm bone (humerus) and replaces it with a ball-shaped prosthetic. He also fits a new socket (glenoid) for the ball to fit into.
- Reverse Total Shoulder Replacement – If you have a rotator cuff tear or similar injury that’s so severe you have problems raising your arms, a reverse total shoulder replacement might be a good option. In this procedure, Dr. Pancio switches the placement of the new ball and socket prostheses to increase your range of motion.
- Total Knee Replacement – Qr. Pancio replaces the ends of your femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone) where they meet in your knee. He may also resurface your patella (kneecap) to ensure the new joint operates smoothly.
- Total Hip Replacement – Your hip is a ball and socket joint like your shoulder. The procedure is similar to total shoulder replacement, with Dr. Pancio reshaping the end of your femur and fitting a new ball to fit into a new socket (acetabulum) in your pelvis.
What does joint replacement surgery involve?
Your joint replacement surgery takes place under general anesthetic or sometimes a local anesthetic and sedation. Dr. Pancio performs joint replacement surgery in one of two ways – either going through the front of your joint (anterior approach) or the back of the joint (posterior approach).
Wherever possible, Dr. Pancio uses minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques to perform joint replacement surgery. Arthroscopy requires just a few small incisions in the tissues surrounding your joint, through which Dr. Pancio inserts the arthroscope — a tiny camera on a flexible tube.
Using images sent back by the arthroscope’s camera, Dr. Pancio can perform joint replacement surgery without opening up the joint completely. This has numerous benefits, including less pain and a faster recovery.

ABOUT DR.
PANCIO
I was hit by car, had a compound fracture with a bone sticking out of my left foot. Broken tibia and fibia?. Screwed plate and bones back together. I am healing fine, next visit 3/26 to remove stiches. I seem to have total function of foot. Still have 2 more weeks of not using leg, but very hopeful.
Very considerate and professional. Did not at any time feel rushed. Offered advice without surgery. Prior surgery by him was extremely successful. Excellent Doctor.
Very professional happy with visit explained issue and treatment process and took time to answer my questions and concerns.
Very smooth experience. Dr. Pancio was very focused, patient, and communicative through every step.
He actually took the time to listen and respond appropriately. He was upfront and honest. Much appreciated.
Very helpful.
No problems. Staff was efficient and courteous. Dr. was professional and honest.
Dr. Pancho is high energy and personable. He didn’t rush through follow up appointments and made sure we understood any procedures and answered all of my questions. I especially liked how he kept my wife informed of my progress during surgery and by phone speaker during appointments. His written material he gave me was personalized for my specific injury and was easy to follow.
My son was seen for a broken arm. Everyone was very kind and patient with him, as this was a new experience for us. I am very pleased with the service we received and for a healed arm.
Dr. Pancio studied my daughters MRI before he came in and talked to us. He examined her knee and told us that her exam confirmed what he had found on the MRI which was missed by the radiologist. He prescribed the appropriate physical therapy and my daughter is on her way to making a full recovery without surgery! If she would have needed surgery, we have full confidence that Dr. Pancio would be great! He is very observant and knowledgeable. He explained everything that is going on with her knee also why and when it would hurt in different situations.
